The Procedure of Vascular Stent Placement Explained

Vascular stent placement is a minimally invasive procedure typically performed in a catheterization laboratory. The process begins with the insertion of a catheter through a small incision, often in the groin or wrist.

Using imaging guidance, the catheter is navigated to the narrowed vessel. A balloon angioplasty is performed to widen the vessel, after which the stent is deployed and expanded into position.

The stent remains permanently in place, supporting the vessel walls and preventing collapse. Patients are usually awake during the procedure and may experience minimal discomfort.

Recovery time is relatively short, with many patients discharged the same day or within 24 hours. The procedure has significantly reduced the need for open vascular surgery.
