The Procedure of Ureteral Stent Placement Explained

Ureteral stent placement is a minimally invasive procedure performed by a urologist. It typically begins with cystoscopy, where a thin scope is inserted through the urethra into the bladder.

Using imaging guidance, the stent is carefully advanced into the ureter until one end reaches the kidney. The curled ends anchor the stent, preventing migration. The entire procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes.

Anesthesia choice depends on the patient’s condition and procedure complexity. Many placements are done under local anesthesia with sedation, while others require general anesthesia.

After placement, patients may experience urinary urgency, mild burning, or flank discomfort. These symptoms usually improve over time and are managed with medications.

The procedure is considered safe, with complications being relatively rare when performed by experienced clinicians.
